PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element of a vertical orientation type capable of achieving satisfactory uniformity in display. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element has a pair of transparent substrates arranged by opposing each other at a predetermined interval therebetween, a plurality of first transparent electrodes 34 formed at an opposing face side at one side of the transparent substrates, a plurality of second transparent electrodes 24 formed at an opposing face side at the other side of the transparent substrates to cross the first transparent electrodes orthogonally, mono-domain vertical orientation films formed at respective opposing face sides of the transparent electrodes and applied with orientation processing in parallel with the longitudinal direction of the second transparent electrodes, a liquid crystal layer in a vertical orientation mode nipped and held between a pair of substrates and having a pre-tilt angle, and a pair of polarizing plates arranged across the pair of substrates. Each pixel is formed in each crossing part of the first and second transparent electrodes, and the direction of the orientation of molecules at the center of the liquid crystal layer is parallel with the longitudinal direction of the second transparent electrodes. Triangular cut-in sections 6 are formed at edges 7 of the first transparent electrodes constituting one side of the pixel where the direction of orientation and the direction in which liquid crystal molecules generated by oblique electric fields at the edges of the first transparent substrates are inverted.
