PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine the compatibility between the direction of the upper/lower surfaces of recording paper and the direction of image information to be recorded without wasting the recording paper before the recording paper is subjected to image recording processing in the state in which the recording paper for which the paper-direction elements including the top/bottom direction of the upper/lower surfaces and the correlation of the top/bottom direction of the upper/lower surfaces determined in advance are stored. SOLUTION: A top/bottom direction comparison unit 156 carries out comparison whether the top/bottom direction of the characters printed on the recording paper 50 matches the top/bottom direction of the image to be printed by image formation. A printability automatic determination unit 158 determines the appropriateness of the direction of the recording paper 50 based on the match/unmatch of the top/bottom direction.
