PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrial robot capable of maintaining a high degree of flexibility in positioning of a robot, particularly an end effector thereof, and raising the degree of flexibility in installation of the robot itself at the same time. SOLUTION: A horizontal articulated robot is provided with an extendable rotating shaft 16 linearly movable in a vertical direction with respect to a second arm 15. The extendable rotating shaft 16 assumes a form of an extendable pole comprising a plurality of drawably connected, telescopic casings 16A to 16F, the innermost casing 16F of which is provided with the end effector at its end portion 17. The outermost casing 16A is fixed to the second arm 15, and the innermost casing 16F is connected to a drive cord 25 driven for feed-out and lead-in operations by an extension drive unit 20 inside the second arm 15, so that the end effector is positioned according to a feed-out amount or lead-in amount of the drive cord 25.
