The compressor (2) has an electric motor (12) arranged in a crankcase, and a motor switch (16) formed as an electronic switch. A control device (18) is assigned to two phases of the electric motor and compares level of motor current and start-up time of the motor current with limit values stored in a storage device of the control device during start-up phase and operation phase of the electric motor. The control device releases control measures depending on comparison of the measured values with the stored limit values.
