<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light emitting element which is increased in reflectivity to light traveling toward a substrate to have improved light extraction efficiency, and a method of manufacturing the same. <P>SOLUTION: The light emitting element includes a substrate, a semiconductor layer provided on the substrate and having a light emitting layer capable of emitting emission light and a contact layer, a first electrode provided to the side of a first surface of the contact layer, a photonic crystal layer having a periodic structure composed of at least two media and having a pitch 1/4 to 3/4 time as large as an in-medium wavelength of the emitted light, and capable of reflecting the emission light, and a bonding metal layer provided on the substrate and bonded to the first electrode.
