<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aqueous ink composition which is excellent in ejection stability and attains printing of high definition even when applied to high driving frequency in an inkjet recording method and to provide a pigment dispersion used for the same. <P>SOLUTION: The pigment dispersion contains at least a self dispersion type pigment having at least one hydrophilic dispersibility-imparting group introduced to the pigment surface directly and/or via a multivalent group, wherein the pigment dispersion is subjected to heat treatment in a state of containing the self dispersion type pigment, the wetting agent of 0.1 to 10 mass% of the total amount of the pigment dispersion, and water.
