PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide, in a light emitting device using a laser diode as a light source, a semiconductor light emitting device which has thin light emission area and can obtain linear white light of high luminance and compatibly dissipates heat and extracts light. SOLUTION: A semiconductor light emitting device includes a package having a light extraction opening, a semiconductor laser diode arranged in the package and emitting light having a wavelength in a range from ultraviolet light to visible light, and a visible light emitting body which contains a phosphor absorbing light emitted by the semiconductor laser diode and outputting visible light differing in wavelength, and is arranged on the optical path of the laser diode while having its periphery in contact with the package.
