The device has an inlet valve (4) provided with an inlet opening (3) in a combustion chamber (1). An outlet opening (2) is provided in a region of bottom dead center of a piston (12). Air flowing through the inlet valve is raised under constant pressure through a combination of two air-blowers (6) in lower and higher speed regions by a mechanical loader and an exhaust turbocharger, respectively. Fuel e.g. diesel, is supplied at high pressure by a direct injection nozzle (8) in a cylinder head (9).
