PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the most of characteristics of electronic zooming that no mechanical noise is generated and characteristics of optical zooming that there is no deterioration in picture quality. SOLUTION: When photography is not selected in S2, the optical zooming is carried out. Once photography is selected, a zooming operation is decided in S4 on condition that image information from an imaging element is compressed and recorded in S3. When zooming is selected in S4, a possibility of application of hybrid zooming is decided in S5 and when the hybrid zooming is applicable, the electronic zooming is carried out first in S6. Then the optical zoom is carried out slowly at a low speed in S7 and the electronic zooming is finely adjusted substantially simultaneously in S8. Namely, switching of picture planes wherein the area of the imaging element is widened is gradually performed in S8 such that change of the optical zooming is canceled by the electronic zooming. Thus, the hybrid zooming by the electronic zooming and optical zooming in combination with priority given to the electronic zooming is carried out in S4 to S8. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
