PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction plate for a friction engaging device, enabling to reduce drag loss without changing the number and area of friction materials and the amount of lubricating oil to be supplied to the friction engaging device. SOLUTION: The friction plate 10A includes a ring-shaped core plate 11, and the friction materials 12A, the friction materials 12A being pasted to the core plate 11. Each friction material 12A has a surface shaped to slide lubricating oil in the peripheral direction when the friction engaging device is released. In details, the friction material 12A has the surface shaped to form an air layer LA on the surface of the friction material 12A with the lubricating oil contacting it when the friction engaging device is released.
