PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic auto tensioner with less restrictions in installation. SOLUTION: An upper opening of a cylinder 11 filled with hydraulic fluid on the inside is sealed by an oil seal 13. A plunger 15 capable of sliding along the inner diameter face of the cylinder is provided at a lower part of a rod 14 slidably penetrating the oil seal. A passage 19 is formed in the plunger for communicating a pressure chamber 16 at a lower side thereof and a reserver chamber 17 provided at an upper side thereof. A check valve 20 is provided at an end opening of the passage on the pressure chamber side. A spring seat 22 is provided at an upper end of the rod outside the cylinder, and a return spring 29 for biasing the rod and the cylinder in the extending direction is provided between flanges 28 provided at a lower part of the outer periphery of the cylinder. The return spring is installed to be positioned at the outer side of the cylinder, so that the return spring is prevented from interfering with an engine block 26 during installation of the hydraulic auto tensioner.
