PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To further shorten a required time for copying by further decreasing the waste of movement of a printing head of a serial printer in accordance with the kind of a manuscript. SOLUTION: The serial printer includes: a reading means for reading a raster image from a manuscript medium; an analyzing means for deriving the horizontal distribution of pixels denser than the ground color of the manuscript medium on every band containing lines of the predetermined number of lines on the raster image; a threshold value deriving means for deriving a definite threshold value in accordance with the length L of a section where the accumulated number of the horizontal distribution from the end of the band does not exceed a predetermined temporary threshold value; and a moving distance controlling means for decreasing the moving distance of the print head to meet the section where the accumulating number of the horizontal distribution from the end of the band exceeds the definite threshold value.
