PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of easily producing a catalyst for use in hydrogenation purification excellent both in desulfuration activity and denitrogenation activity. SOLUTION: The method of producing a catalyst for use in hydrogenation purification includes a first process of mixing an aqueous acidic solution of an aluminum salt and an aqueous alkaline solution of an aluminum salt in the presence of a phosphate ion and a silicate ion controlling the pH of the mixture in a range of 6.5 to 9.5 to obtain a hydrate, a second process of adding boron to the hydrate to prepare a material for producing a support, a third process of casting the material for producing a support and calcining the resulting article to obtain a support, a fourth process of supporting molybdenum, cobalt and nickel by the support to obtain a catalyst precursor, and a fifth process of bringing the catalyst precursor to contact with a mixed gas comprising hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide under a condition at a pressure of at least 2.0 MPa and at the maximum temperature of 240 to 380°C to subject the catalyst precursor to a preliminary sulfuration treatment.
