The method involves determining driving direction information by a control device (4) e.g. electronic stability program control device and antilock braking system, where the information indicates rotation direction of wheels (2). Vehicle systems (8-10) are activated based on the direction information with the rotation direction, which indicates rearward motion of a motor vehicle (1). The vehicle systems are switched into a rearward driving module and/or are deactivated with the rotation direction indicating forward motion of the vehicle and/or are switched into a forward driving mode. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle performing a method for controlling a vehicle system.
