PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To safely use a storage device like an HDD or the like in an information processing apparatus.

SOLUTION: The storage device is configured by arranging a user region in which data are stored and a service region in which a password is stored on a storage medium such that data are made accessible by input of a user password in a password validation state, and that a lock state in which data are not made accessible without input of the user password is set, and that the lock state is made releasable by input of a master password. A control unit is configured to control a security mode in which the information processing apparatus is operated while setting the storage device to a password valid state for use, and to set the user password to a prescribed value when the information processing apparatus is operated in a non-security mode.
