PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress reduced torque response during accelerating operation while reducing a delay in converging timing to a target value of valve timing in a constant state after acceleration, in an internal combustion engine for a vehicle provided with a variable valve gear varying the valve timing of an intake valve. SOLUTION: The engine 101 for the vehicle includes a VTC (Variable valve Timing Control) mechanism 113a varying the valve timing of the intake valve 105. In the accelerating operation, an engine control unit (ECU) 114 sets the target value in acceleration of the valve timing of the intake valve 105 according to the operating condition of the VTC mechanism 113a, and controls the VTC mechanism 113a based on the set target value in acceleration.
