The device (1) has a charge pump (CP) variably switched-on and switched-off in response to a level of an output signal. The device exhibits a control stage, which is formed in such a manner to determine a characteristic i.e. switch-off period, of a duty cycle of the charge pump using a time reference signal i.e. periodic clock signal, and to control a parameter of the charge pump in response to the determined characteristic. The parameter of the charge pump is selected from one of clock frequency and operating current. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a display.
