<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow an upper arm to be easily pulled out of an arm band and to prevent unnecessary load from being applied on an air bag. <P>SOLUTION: A sphygmomanometer 10 includes the arm band 12 having an air bag 36 to press the upper arm of a subject inserted thereinto, a pressure pump 78 to supply air to the air bag 36, an emission valve 80 to emit the air from the air bag 36 with variable opening, a display part 22 to display a blood pressure value, and a pressure sensor 86 to detect the pressure of the air bag 36 and to supply a control part 20. The control part 20 supplies the air to the air bag 36 by the pressure pump 78 and pressurizes it, stops the pressure pump 78, moderately opens the emission valve 80, depressurizes the air bag 36 at a predetermined speed so as to obtain the blood pressure value, and releases the emission valve 80 after the blood pressure vale is obtained.
