<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read authentication information relatively quickly or, alternatively, to limit ability assigned for reading of the authentication information in an information processing means to perform other processing relatively quickly, according to the state of processing to be carried out. <P>SOLUTION: A time interval for reading the authentication information is set to a previously decided default short time interval (step S1). It is determined whether a user can use a digital copying machine (step S4). When it is determined that the user can use the digital copying machine (Y in step S4), authority to use the digital copying machine 1 of the user is authenticated. In this step, a processing state of the digital copying machine is changed during use by the user (step S5).
