PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optically active quaternary ammonium salt having axial asymmetry and a method for producing anα-amino acid and derivatives thereof using it as a phase-transfer catalyst. SOLUTION: The optically active quaternary ammonium salt having axial asymmetry that is represented by formula (I) and the method for producing anα-amino acid and derivatives thereof using the quaternary ammonium as a chiral phase-transfer catalyst are provided.
