A system and method for updating passbooks, wherein the passbook identifier is palced in the inner part preferably in each print page or in one of the pages of the passbooks, wherein a passbook printer configured with a scanner for scanning at least a portion of the passbook page for acquiring the passbook identification information from the image of the page for then processing the transaction. The invention is expected to significantly reduce the costs of operation and handling as well as the costs of the equipments for updating passbooks.
