PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper currency identifying device wherein a lower number of driving parts in a conveyance mechanism and a paper currency containment mechanism is reduced, and costs can be reduced. SOLUTION: The device is provided with a drive mechanism 70, which drives the conveyance mechanism 20 and the paper currency containment mechanism 60 each by means of force from a common drive motor 71. As the path of force transmission from the drive mechanism 70 is switched between either the conveyance mechanism 20 or the paper currency containment mechanism 60 by means of a switch mechanism 80, there is no need to provide both a drive motor for the conveyance mechanism 20 and a drive motor for the paper currency containment mechanism 60, and so a reduction in the number of parts and a reduction in cost are possible.
