PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress occurrence of flicker at reducing an AC power supplied to a discharge lamp. SOLUTION: A controlling circuit switches over an AC power to be supplied to a discharge lamp from a rated power to a lower power when a switching over instruction to switch over from the rated power mode to a lower power mode is received through a push-button switch (time M), and then performs a modulation treatment of an AC current input into the discharge lamp by changing its duty ratio in steps.
