PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbon fiber excellent in adhesion with a matrix resin by defining the ideal surface conditions of the carbon fiber, and a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: In measurement of an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, this carbon fiber has an oxygen concentration at the carbon fiber surface (O/C ratio: the number of oxygen atoms/the number of carbon atoms) of 0.20 to 0.35, and has a sub peak component at an energy position from a bonding energy position (284.6 eV) of a component between carbons, which is the main peak (peak top) of carbon C1s inner shell spectrum, to the energy position within the range of +1.6 to +2.6 eV (bond energy 286.2 to 287.2 eV) range, and has≥(1/3) height ratio of the sub peak to the main peak.
