The device has a moisture sensor (5), a control device (4) and a sprinkler system (3) with a sprinkling nozzle. The moisture sensor has a measuring head (6) and a probe head (7). The measuring head determines the water content of the test material by a reference material (8) which is contained in the probe head. The moisture absorption- and delivery is so retained that a definite correlation between the moisture content in the reference material and the moisture content in the test material exists. The test material is a filter material (2) of a biofilter (1).
