PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manuscript's size determining technology for determining the size of a subject at low costs, in high resolution, and highly precisely, reducing power consumption, and reducing glare to users when a light source is lit. SOLUTION: LED elements included in an LED light source array for illuminating a manuscript put on to a manuscript reading device are enabled to be lit for each block thereof. An image forming device uses the LED light source array and a photoreceptor for reading the image of the manuscript to sense the presence or absence of the manuscript in a main scanning direction, and uses a reflex sensor to sense the presence or absence of the manuscript in a sub scanning direction, thus controlling the order in which each block of the LED light source array is lit.
