PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper conveying device conveying paper without delay, even if the paper is thick. SOLUTION: A paper feeding sensor 74 for detecting a rear end of recording paper is provided on a paper conveying direction upstream side of a paper feeding roller 71 and in the vicinity of the paper feeding roller 71. The paper feeding roller 71 and a pickup roller 19 are rotated and driven until the rear end of the recording paper is detected by the paper feeding sensor 74, conveying of the recording paper by each roller 71, 19 is continued, and each roller 71, 19 is stopped just after the detection of the rear end of the recording paper by the paper feeding sensor 74. The conveying of the recording paper by each roller 71, 19 is continued, therefore, until the rear end of the recording paper is detected by the paper feeding sensor 74, even in the recording paper of the first sheet, conveying force of the recording paper is improved, and contact between each roller 71, 19 and the recording paper does not become paper conveying resistance.
