A transmission unit 10 capable of storing energy, especially for renewable energy harvesting means such as wind turbines, comprises a rotatable input member 18 for conveying rotational drive, a rotatable output member 19, a looped connecting means 17 arranged to be driven by the input member and to drive the output member. A guide 20 is coupled to the looped connecting means and is movable in first and second opposite directions in dependence upon the relative rates of rotation of the input member and output member. An energy storage means 31 such as a spring or weight are arranged to store potential energy in response to movement of the guide in the first direction and to drive the output member by movement of the guide in the second direction. The transmission unit can operate in two modes, controlled by a switch in response to the position of the guide, in the first mode a brake is applied to the output member to urge the unit to store energy, in the second mode the brake is not applied so that the input member and the stored energy both drive the output member. |
