PURPOSE: A card reader and a method for distinguishing whether an IC chip exists or not as non-contact way are provided to rapidly and accurately distinguish whether an inserted card to a card reader is a magnetic card or an IC card. CONSTITUTION: A metal sensor detects electrostatic capacity or self-capacity change when metal of an inserted card(10) is near to the constant distance. A temperature sensor(130) measures the temperature change of nearby the metal detecting sensor. An oscillation circuit unit(140) transmits the designated value of the oscillation frequency. By distinguishing whether the oscillation frequency change is by the temperature change or the metal, a micro computer unit(160) distinguishes whether the metal exist or not as in non contact way. |
