Use of at least one copolymer or its salts comprising at least one substituted ethylene unit of formula (-CR 1>R 2>-CR 3>(-[CH 2] m-[C(=O)] n-[W 1>] q-[R 4>-O-] r-R 5>)-) (I) or (-CR 1>R 2>-CR 3>(-[CH 2] m-[C(=O)] n-[W 1>] q-[R 4>-O-] r-R 8>)-) (II), as water reducing agent in hydraulic binders, where the copolymer has molecular weight of 10000-400000 Daltons, is claimed. R 1>-R 3>H, or 1-20C alkyl; R 4>2-20C alkyl; R 5>group of formula (-P(OR 6>)(=O)-OR 6>) or (-[CH 2] t-NR 7>-[CH 2] t-PO 3(R 6>) 2); R 6>H, 1-20C alkyl, or monovalent, divalent, or trivalent quaternary ammonium group; R 7>H, 1-18C alkyl, or group of formula (-[CH 2] t-PO 3(R 6>) 2); R 8>1-20C alkyl or H; W 1>O or N; m : 0-2; n, q : 0 or 1; r : 0-500; and t : 1-18.
