The device (1) has a driving shaft (30) rotating around longitudinal axis (X). A drive assembly (50) and the shaft are partially placed inside a cover (20). A driving unit (51) is assembled on the assembly, and axially moves from a position in which the driving unit is stopped against a surface (21) of the cover to another position in which a thermal engine is driven. Protection units have protection ring and a protection washer (60), and protect the driving unit and the cover from shock generated between a body of the driving unit and the cover when the unit returns to the former position. An independent claim is also included for a method for manufacturing a starting device.
