PURPOSE: A composition using Phlomis umbrosa Turcz. extract and Polygala tenuifolia Willd. extract for preventing or treating insomnia is provided to normally recover sleep state. CONSTITUTION: A composition for preventing or treating insomnia contains Polygala tenuifolia Willd. extract, Phlomis umbrosa Turcz. extract or mixture as an active ingredient. The extract is obtained using water, hydrous and anhydrous low alcohol of 1-4 carbon atoms(methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, normal-propanol, iso-propanol and normal-butanol), mixture solvent of low alcohol and water, acetone, ethyl acetate, chloroform, 1,3-butylene glycol, hexane or diethyl ether.
