PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately discriminate the stroke of a cylinder even when no signal is detected from a cam angle sensor at cranking. SOLUTION: A control method for an internal combustion engine in the event of cranking is to discriminate the stroke of each cylinder in operation by sensing an N-signal b due to a crank angle sensor emitted at the timing when a piston lies at the upper dead center and sensing a G-signal c due to the cam angle sensor emitted at the timing in coincidence to the ignition timing of the cylinder at the compression upper dead center on the basis of the rotation of a camshaft which drives at least one of a suction valve and an exhaust valve where the driving is made with the crankshaft rotation decelerated to 1/2, in which discriminating the cylinder stroke is conducted in case no sensing is made for the G-signal c in the event of cranking, on the assumption that the timing when the battery voltage i takes the minimum is a virtual G-signal ic.
