PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of accurately performing dust detection processing without delaying a read starting time. SOLUTION: An operational process of document reading herein is based on performing dust detection in timing of a period during idling from the end of document reading to the start of next document reading, as a function of a dust detecting means for detecting dust existent at a reading position from image data, on a fundamental configuration (functional configuration) of an image reading apparatus. Further, the image reading apparatus includes a function for performing the detection of dust after the lapse of a fixed period, that can be arbitrarily set, from the end of document reading, and for maintaining a lighted state of an exposure lamp until the lapse of the fixed period.
