In a method of controlling a welding apparatus that has a linear output characteristic between a welding output voltage and a welding output current, a target welding output voltage is preset that is higher than an initial preset welding voltage depending on a difference between the initial preset welding voltage and the current welding output voltage so that the current welding output voltage attains the target welding output voltage. The present method enables to maintain a suitable arc length by quickly correcting deviations due to irregular hand movements of an operator.
