Method and apparatus for treating roots in and around a conduit using a microwave transmitter

Disclosed is a method of treating tree or plant roots (12) in and/or around a conduit (20), to kill or inhibit growth of the roots which can breach underground pipes. The method includes the steps of: positioning a microwave transmitter (1) within the conduit near the roots to be treated, and irradiating the roots with microwave radiation from the transmitter to kill or inhibit growth of at least a portion of the roots.
