PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a chromene compound having an excellent photochromic characteristic in a high yield. SOLUTION: This chromene compound is produced by reacting a propargyl alcohol derivative expressed by general formula (1) [wherein, R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>4</SP>are each alkyl, alkoxy, aralkoxy, aralkyl or aryl; and (a) and (b) are each an integer of 0 to 4] with a naphthol derivative in an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of a pyridinium p-toluenesulphonate salt at <100°C reaction temperature.
