<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem, in an optical disk medium having a plurality of recording layers, that time required before the start of recording becomes longer if write trial is performed at each recording, and also the problem, in a write-once medium, that the number of new write operations is restricted because the use amount of a write trial area is increased each time new write operation is made. <P>SOLUTION: Write trial at the time of recording is performed only using a layer on which the recording is started.
