<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a method for recovering phase information from the recorded intensity values. <P>SOLUTION: A phase filter (230), such as one or more diopter lenses, is placed in the back focal plane (BFP)(230) of a lens (210) to be used for observing an object. The phase filter (230) changes the phase of a wave front distribution in the BFP in a known method. The system captures N different sets of intensity data in the image plane (IP)(240) by using N different phase filters (230) or N phase distributions to be generated by an electronically variable phase filter (230). The N intensity images are used for obtaining an estimate of the wave front at the BFP of the lens. This BFP wave front estimate is then used for generating N modified estimates of the wave front at the IP.
