PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a modified conjugated diene polymer or copolymer, exhibiting especially superior interaction between a rubber component and carbon black and/or silica, capable of improving the dispersibility of these fillers, and having excellent low heat build-up, fracture characteristics, abrasion resistance or the like. SOLUTION: The method for producing the modified conjugated diene polymer or copolymer includes reacting a modifier with an active site of a polymer having the organometal type active site in the molecule. The modifier is used as a primary modifier, and is a compound containing (a) a reactive group causing a covalent bond with the polymer by reacting with the active site, and (b) the same or different kinds of two or more nitrogen-containing functional groups present on one linear chain from the reactive group, regulated so that (c) at least one of the nitrogen-containing functional groups may be a primary or secondary amino group protected with a hydrolyzable functional group containing a silicon atom and having a N-Si bond, and may contain zero or one tertiary amino group, and the terminal of the linear chain may be a tertiary amino group or a primary amino group the active proton of which is protected with a hydrolyzable functional group containing the silicon and having the N-Si bond, and containing no active proton in the molecule.
