PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that a control algorithm becomes complicated in feedback control of quantity of exhaust gas to be recirculated, namely EGR quantity, detecting combustion roughness value which is a ratio of change quantity of the cylinder inner pressure maximum value to average value of the cylinder inner pressure maximum value by comparison determination pulse width operated based on ignition voltage changing based on existence of ion current flowing in a prescribed period of time, and making the detected combustion roughness value coincide with a target roughness value. SOLUTION: In a method for controlling exhaust gas recirculation in an internal combustion engine which includes a recirculation valve adjusting quantity of exhaust gas to be recirculated to an intake system, and a combustion state detection means detecting a combustion state in the internal combustion engine, and in which the combustion state detection means adjusts quantity of the exhaust gas to be recirculated by controlling the recirculation valve according to the detected combustion state, quantity of the exhaust gas is controlled if combustion satisfies prescribed conditions, and the prescribed conditions includes that start position at which main combustion affecting engine output starts after reference engine rotation position exceeds a first prescribed position.
