The gear shift system, for a motor vehicle gearbox, has a shift control (5a,5b) at the steering wheel, rotating with it and a gear lever (6a,6b) for shifting the gears up and down. The gear shift lever can be moved from neutral only in one direction with a push switch (7a,7b) on the outer side of the lever towards the driver to move it in the opposite direction.
