PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical writing device that irradiates a photoreceptor with a light beam, to form an electrostatic latent image, wherein the position of the light beam on a photoreceptor surface in a vertical scanning direction is detected with high accuracy, using a simple cofiguration. SOLUTION: A position detection device 289, which detects the position of the light beam in the vertical scanning direction in the optical writing device 111, which forms the electrostatic latent image on the photoreceptor includes an optical sensor 287, which receives a light beam emitted by a light source device 201 and deflected by a reflecting mirror 280 to make a scan in a main scanning direction, and a mirror 288 which guides the light to move reciprocally on a light-receiving surface of the optical sensor 287 according to the scanning position in the main scanning direction, a light reception area 291 of the optical sensor 287 being in a long-sized shape and provided so as to have its long-sized direction inclined, with respect to the main scanning direction.
