First noncompressed data is read out of a first recording medium. The first noncompressed data is stored in a buffer memory, read out of the buffer memory at a rate higher than the normal reproduction rate of the first noncompressed data, and compressed, thereby creating compressed data. The created compressed data is recorded in a second recording medium. It is determined whether or not a predetermined number of units of compressed data are recorded in the second recording medium. If it is determined that recording a predetermined number of units of compressed data is not completed yet, the above-mentioned processing is continued. If it is determined the recording is completed, the compressed data is read out of the second recording medium at a rate higher than the normal reproduction rate and decompressed instead of the above-mentioned processing. Thereby second noncompressed data is generated, and the generated second noncompressed data is stored in the buffer memory.
