<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nip preventing device of a passenger conveyor for securing high safety independent from conditions of a building at low installation costs. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In this nip preventing device 18 of a passenger conveyor, a passenger conveyor 1 includes an endless footstep 2 inclined upward and downward, a handrail belt 3 guided by a parapet 4 standing on both sides of the footstep 2 and mainly made of a glass panel 6, and driven at the same speed and in the same direction as the footstep 2, and an outside deck 9 arranged at a lower outside part of the glass panel 6. Below a lower story of a portion, at which a lower face of a ceiling 10 of a building is crossed with the handrail belt 3, a bottom end is fixed to the outside deck 9 of the passenger conveyor 1 at a constant interval from the glass panel 6 and the handrail belt 3, and a protection column 15 extending upward beyond the height of the handrail belt 3 is provided upright.
