A luminance distribution determination device judges whether or not a predetermined luminance distribution exists in a region based on the luminance status quantity computed by a luminance status quantity calculation device. An object type determination device distinguishes an object type i.e. pedestrian based on determination result of the luminance distribution determination device. A binarized object extraction device extracts a binarized object from the image data. A luminance status quantity calculation device computes a luminance status quantity of a region set by a region setting device, such that a region includes the extracted binarized object on a gray scale image.
