PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for modulating glutathione metabolism in the central nervous system, and an agent which is used for the same. SOLUTION: The present invention relates to a method for up-regulating glutathione metabolism in the central nervous system by up-regulating levels of glutathione precursor molecules which includes a step in which an effective amount of a glutathione precursor, a derivative thereof, a homology object, an analog, a chemically equivalent object or a mimetic is administered in mammals. The method is particularly useful, inter alia, in the treatment and/or prophylaxis of conditions characterized by aberrant, unwanted or otherwise inappropriate central nervous system oxidation homeostasis including, but not limited to, schizophrenia.
