PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently emit ultraviolet rays having a wavelength region of 300-380 nm which are required for polymerizing monomer. SOLUTION: This ultraviolet irradiation device includes an iodine solid in room temperature and rare gas, a discharge container having a discharge space which is formed between a pair of wall parts opposing each other and a sealing wall part and an iodine solid storage space which forms the coldest part of the discharge space, and a pair of electrodes arranged opposing each other across the discharge space. It also includes a lamp for emitting ultraviolet rays having a peak wavelength of 342 nm or so with the iodine solid supplying iodine gas into the discharge space to form excited iodine molecules, a temperature varying part for setting the iodine solid storage space at a predetermined temperature, and a control part for controlling the operation of the temperature varying part.
