The present invention relates to a composition for the prevention and treatment of erectile dysfunction, containing a Polygala genus plant extract as an active ingredient. More specifically, extracts from Polygala tenuifolia, Polygala japonica and Polygala senega and other such plants of the genus Polygala have an outstanding effect in improving maximum penile erectile strength and maintaining penile erection, and thus can be usefully employed in compositions for preventing and treating erectile dysfunction and in health and functional foods for preventing and alleviating erectile dysfunction.
