The method involves hydraulically, electromagnetically or electromechanically activating a switching element during forward downhill braking of a motor vehicle in a gear and a rearward- downhill braking in a reverse gear. Negative torque resting against a transmission output shaft (2) by a thrust torque and produced by tensioning of a power train is increased. A desired vehicle speed is adjusted by controlling the switching element. An engine torque is increased by accelerating an engine control unit.
